Are you stuck in a blogging rut? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. As the Client Success Services Editor at Active Blogs, blogging is part of my job — so when I find myself lacking “blogspiration” it can be a frustrating and intimidating experience.
But as one who has felt the woes of “I have nothing to write about!” many times, I can tell you one thing for certain: There is always something to write about!
When you’re desperately in need of some blogspiration, try these four tricks to get your blogging groove back.
Emulate the blogs that you admire. After all, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. This doesn’t mean you should go about stealing ideas or content from the blogs you enjoy reading. Rather, take a look at your favorite blog posts and ask yourself why they’re your favorites? Is it because of the lighthearted tone, heavy use of imagery, or how-to style? Let other blogs inspire your own content creation.
Keep current with your industry. Knowing the latest and greatest is important no matter what field you are in. Subscribe to an industry newsletter or join email lists to get relevant news delivered to your inbox. The fresh topics will give you more fuel for your content efforts, and the timeliness of the subject matter will resonate with your readers.
Ask others for ideas. Two minds are better than one! When you’ve hit an inspiration roadblock, ask your colleagues what they think an interesting blog topic might be. You’ll be surprised by how many ideas they may have right off the bat. Remember to write every idea down. Even if you don’t think you’ll use all the topics, it will be helpful for the next time you are stuck in a content rut.
Step away for a while. When all else fails, and you feel like your head will explode before you’ll come up with a usable topic, step away and take a break. Organize your desk. Go for a walk. Watch a video of overly excited otters on YouTube. Give yourself time to de-stress and empty your thoughts before you give it another go. Even a little time away can make a big difference when you feel like you’re running on empty.
A lack of blog inspiration can be scary, but it won’t last forever. Stay informed, surround yourself with new ideas, and know when it is time to step away from the issue at hand. You’ll find that new inspiration is often right around the corner.
